Living For Grace vs Living For Pleasure

Just do whatever feels good and doesn’t hurt other people. Good advice, right?

No. That is horrible advice. Like, really bad.

Don’t be tricked into putting the pursuit of pleasure before the pursuit of obedience. Learn to imitate Jesus, rather than people around you. Grace cost Jesus everything. Truly living by grace will cost us too. That’s a fact. But it’s worth it.

“But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.”

All of us face times where we have to choose between living for grace and living for pleasure – make sure you know in advance which one is really going to give you the life you want.

Set Free For What?

You’re unexpectedly set free from death row. You can’t believe it. You’re offered a new life, home and job. It’s unbelievable! But a month later you’re still wearing your prison clothes, hanging out with your old gang and back to your old ways. But it’s OK – you’ve got your get-out-of-jail-free card.

When our new life in Christ looks like our old life, the grace we’ve been given is cheapened by our actions. God loved us so very, very much that Christ sacrificed himself for us. Our freedom was bought at a great price. We are new creations in Christ, and called to so much more than our old ways.

Let’s ask God to help us remember his sacrifice, and remind us what we’re really living for.

Smeagol vs Gollum

You ever feel there’s this shadow side to you that keeps you doing stuff you wish you wouldn’t – or that prevents you from doing the things you really do want to do?

Almost like Smeagol fighting with Gollum in the Lord of the Rings http://bit.ly/1mFfwj5

Even the Apostle Paul struggled: ‘I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me?’

Well, here’s good news 🙂 Grace. Grace is ‘God’s energy, an energy deep within you, God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure’ (Philippians 2:12-13)

Need to ask God for more of that kind of grace today?

Grace Moments

You did it again, didn’t you? The thing you feel guilty about; the thing you were trying to stop doing. You’re angry, sad, and ashamed. You’re ready to give up.

Firstly, welcome to the life of every Christian ever. Secondly, pay attention. Embrace this moment, because it’s a grace moment. It’s a place where God wants to meet you.

Grace doesn’t give up on us, why should we? Struggling with bad habits? Make a new habit of turning to God in moments of weakness or failure. Be stubborn about that, because God will never stop working in you when you open your life to His grace.

‘for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure’ Philippians 2:13
