Grace Moments

You did it again, didn’t you? The thing you feel guilty about; the thing you were trying to stop doing. You’re angry, sad, and ashamed. You’re ready to give up.

Firstly, welcome to the life of every Christian ever. Secondly, pay attention. Embrace this moment, because it’s a grace moment. It’s a place where God wants to meet you.

Grace doesn’t give up on us, why should we? Struggling with bad habits? Make a new habit of turning to God in moments of weakness or failure. Be stubborn about that, because God will never stop working in you when you open your life to His grace.

‘for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure’ Philippians 2:13

Macklemore’s songs have got hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. They’re not for everyone but I think people relate to his songs partly cos they express the pain and frustration of trying to figure out life in a messed-up world. Here’s a clip from ‘Inhale Deep’:

‘It’s been so long since I really truly felt / What it’s like to live without substances to help / Massive struggle that’s natural to one’s health / With addiction in my blood / I play the cards I was dealt’

So many substances and other things promise to ease the pain, confusion and heartache of life without God. Is there something trying to seduce you? What would it take to give your pain and frustration to God instead?

New Creation

I used to get really bummed with myself every time I felt like I messed up. It was like I had a standard I thought God expected of me (or I expected from myself?) and every time I missed it, I liked the person I was less and less.

Reading 2 Corinthians 5:17 changed that, though – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, and the new has come!”

If I’m now ‘in Christ’, it’s not just me I’m getting bummed at – it’s the new person Jesus died to make me to be. It didn’t really sit right with me to be criticising that.

I think Jesus wants to make us all into new people, so that we don’t have to feel like I did anymore – pushing into that idea really changed my life and the way I see people around me. Maybe it can for you, too.

Jesus’ Relationship Rescue

Near the end of Jesus’ agonising time on the cross he said three words: ‘It is finished.’ (John 19v30)

What was finished? Everything that needed to be done to make our relationship with God right again.

Do you believe that? A guy called Darrell Johnson said that we can either believe Jesus did that relationship-rescue work for us or we can spend the rest of our lives trying to get it done ourselves.

Are you trying hard to earn a good relationship with God by doing all the right things, or feeling despair cos you can’t get it right?

Here’s good news. Jesus did it already. It is finished.
