Last week I was drinking coffee on a rainy day in a waffle house in America. I was thinking how everything familiar felt so far away, when the radio started playing the song Africa, by Toto. I knew from WhatsApp’ing my friends that it was also raining back home in South Africa.

I was reminded that ‘the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to Him.’ (Psalm 24:1 – http://bit.ly/2vAsEfX)

He blesses the rains down in Africa, and the rains on every other continent too. I’m praying that knowing God holds the whole planet – all the beauty, all the brokenness – will help you make sense of things today.

The cool thing about getting to know God better is that it helps us to love others more. Because the more you know God, the greater the glimpse you’ll get of how much He loves people – you and every other human you’ll ever meet.

When I rub up against someone I don’t necessarily like, I’m trying to call to mind that Jesus loves them so much He died for them. I’m trying to remember to ask Jesus if I can borrow His feelings for that person. And suddenly the mistrust, misunderstanding or offence dissolves a little. ‘We love because He first loved us.’ (1 John 4:19 – http://bit.ly/2zvjtQg)

God told Jonah to go to Ninevah, so Jonah ran away, in the opposite direction. When Jonah eventually gave in and went to Ninevah, he did what God asked, then went and sat under a tree outside the city and sulked. Jonah was disobedient, and grumpy. But God still had work for Jonah to do. God still wanted to include Jonah in His plans to share His love with everyone.

Not even our human weakness can keep us out of God’s plans to include us in the work He wants to do in the world. Read the story of Jonah, listening for how God might want to use you today.

Paul writes that ‘God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance’ (Romans 2:4)

It’s incredible that God cares so much for us that He doesn’t want to leave you or me in the mess we make with our lives. He compassionately convicts us – unsettles us until we turn to Him for freedom.

If you sense a nagging knowing today that God has a higher and more beautiful road for you to travel than the one you’ve chosen to run down, don’t let the feeling defeat you. Gratefully lean into it. Your loving God longs to draw you close.
