‘The prudent (wise) see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.’ (Proverbs 27:12)

We do this with food and sleep, right? (Or is it just me?) We know it’s wise to eat less sugar, but we have another slice of cake anyway. We know it’s wise to get at least seven hours sleep, but we stay up sifting through Netflix anyway. And then we pay the price. And sometimes we keep heading into much bigger, more serious, danger. Which means the price we pay is bigger and more serious too.

What if we started being honest with ourselves: ‘Yip, I see the danger!’ And then asking ourselves: ‘What’s the wise thing to do?’

Let’s say you live in Johannesburg. You’re given a bunch of cash, and a new car! You tell your mates, ‘Let’s go to Cape Town!’ You all pile into the car but instead of taking the N1 to Cape Town, you drive down the N3 – to Durban. No matter how badly you want to get to Cape Town, you’ll end up in Durban, because that’s the road you’re on.

Andy Stanley says, ‘Direction, not intention, determines destination.’ Ask God to show you where the road you’re on is headed. Do you need to look for an off-ramp? ‘Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.’ (Jeremiah 6:16)

What does it all mean?

Have you ever felt like your life is the same thing over and over again? Like you’re just putting on the same clothes, going to the same class, riding the same bus or taxi, eating the same food and getting bored?

There was a man in the Bible who felt that way, who was called “The Preacher”, and he went on a quest. Read Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 (http://bit.ly/2Dhhlko) and 12:13-14 (http://bit.ly/2Djn9Kl).
Today, think about what really matters in your life.

Radically Normal

There are some Christian books that tell us to live a radical life, where we are converting all of our friends, flying half way around the world to preach to an unreached group of people and then still be home in time to do our homework. I don’t know about you, but when I read books like that I feel like I’ve failed. And it got me asking if the Bible says that we all need to be like that?
