Isaiah wrote an amazing prophecy about Jesus in chapter 9 of his book. Here’s the next bit:

‘You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder’ (Isaiah 9v3)

‘Enlarging the nation’ was what God promised Abraham centuries before – and by Isaiah’s time God had done that. Seeing God at work keeping his promises can bring great joy and real hope.

Sending Jesus to us the first time – and the second – is God’s great promise to us. Jesus is God’s great ‘YES!’ to us.

Let each carol you sing and present you give this Christmas be a sign and reminder that God keeps his promise, God is trustworthy and God is FOR us.

Are there dark places in your life? Do you have much hope that things will get better as Christmas draws near? Here’s some good news from an ancient prophecy:

‘The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned’ (Isaiah 9v2)

That’s a promise from back then of what Jesus would one day be. It’s still a promise for all of us right now: ‘anyone who is living in darkness now will see a great light If life seems like dark death, a sunrise is on its way.’

Christmas is about celebrating (and still waiting for) that great light. It’s on its way!

Do you find at Christmas and New Years it’s kinda ok to really want stuff without seeming selfish? Really? John has something to say about that:

‘Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world – wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important – has nothing to do with the Father.’ 1 John 2v15-16 [The Message].

As you squeeze the toothpaste tube today, ask God to show you what might be squeezing his love out of you. Show them to God – and ask for God’s presence to fill you instead.

So, we’ve just celebrated Christmas. But, how easy is it to forget that Jesus really walked around on earth like us? That baby grew up and John saw it:

‘What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life’ (1 John 1v1)

Think about it: The one who created food, learning to eat it; the one who formed the earth, walking on it; the one who created the body, going through puberty; the one who IS the word, memorising and reading it! It’s amazing to think about everything Jesus did to identify with you, to know you and understand you… Jesus is (and always will be) human too.
